A visit to the veterinary clinic can be a source of anxiety for many pets. New smells, unfamiliar sounds, strange animals, and previous negative experiences can all contribute to fear and stress. Stress Free veterinary care is a progressive approach designed to reduce anxiety, fear, and distress for pets—creating a calmer, more positive experience for everyone involved.
Stress Free is based on understanding animal behaviour and recognising the subtle signs of stress before they escalate. When pets feel safe, examinations are more thorough, handling is gentler, and medical outcomes are often improved. At its core, Stress Free care prioritises emotional wellbeing alongside physical health.
At our clinic, several members of our team have completed Stress Free training, allowing us to tailor our handling and approach to each individual pet. Stress Free handling techniques include moving at the animal’s pace, using minimal restraint, offering high-value treats as positive reinforcement, and modifying procedures to reduce stress wherever possible. In some cases, examinations may be performed outside in our private garden, on the floor, in a carrier, and with owners present to help pets feel more secure.
The clinic environment itself plays a significant role in reducing anxiety. We provide a separate waiting area for cats, helping minimise exposure to dogs and loud noises that can increase feline stress. For cats and dogs alike, we use pheromone therapy—such as Feliway® for cats and Adaptil® for dogs—which mimics natural calming signals and can help pets feel more relaxed during their visit.
For some animals, environmental changes and handling techniques alone are not enough. We actively advocate for the use of pre-visit calming medications when appropriate. These medications are prescribed on an individual basis and can significantly reduce fear and anxiety, allowing pets to cope more comfortably with travel, examinations, and procedures. Reducing stress not only improves the pet’s experience but can also enhance safety for owners and staff.
Stress Free care is not about avoiding necessary procedures—it’s about performing them in a way that respects each pet’s emotional state. When stress is minimised, pets are more cooperative, pain is better managed, and repeated visits become less distressing over time.
By embracing Stress Free principles, we aim to build trust, reduce fear, and make every visit as positive as possible. If your pet experiences anxiety or fear around veterinary visits, speak to our team—we are always happy to discuss strategies to help make their next visit calmer and more comfortable.
